NYで今注目のブランド“Peels”のデザイナー Jerome Peelにインタビュー！ Interview with Jerome Peel

NYのIt girls&boysの中で新たなトレンドとなりつつあるブランド、Peels。今回はデザイナー、Jeromeへのスペシャルインタビューを敢行。最近では、人気フォトグラファーRichard Kernとのコラボでも話題となった彼が、NYLONだけに語ってくれたストーリーを是非チェックして。ここでしか見られない、モデル松岡モナと、ボーイフレンドの浅野啓介がPeelsの服を身に纏って登場する撮り下ろし写真も必見！
Peelsについて教えて！ どうやってブランドをスタートさせたの？お父さんのJerome Peel（僕はJr.なんだ）が1990年にペンキ屋を始めた。最初に作ったシャツは、会社用のものだった。お父さんが仕事中にそれを着てくれたら、もっとプロっぽく見えるかなって思ったんだよね。余った何着かを、一着は僕の分として取っておいて、残りを友達にあげた。そうしたら、僕や友達がそのシャツを着ているのを見た人たちが、同じ物を買いたいって言ってくれるようになって。僕はまたもう少しシャツを作ってみることにした。そこからすこしづつPeelsが始まったんだ。最初の頃は、2着のシャツを売ったら、そのお金で3着仕入れて……っていう風にやっていたんだよ。
裁縫や刺繍の技術はどうやって学んだの？始めの段階では、ニューヨークにある仕立て屋にお願いして、パッチはローカルの刺繍業者に委託していた。そうするとすごく高く付くってことが分かって、裁縫用のミシンと、めちゃくちゃ安い中古の刺繍用のものをネットで買ったんだ。やり方は自分で学ばなきゃいけなかったし、てんてこ舞いだったよ。前はよく布を巻き込んじゃっていたんだけど、今ではだいぶ上手くなったと思う。その後、機械式のミシンに変えたんだ。今は、アトリエで縫製からパッチワークまで仕上げているから、工程の全てに目が行き届くようにしているよ。
たくさんのIT girlたちがPeelsの服を着て、いろいろなSNSにアップしているよね。それは‘Peels流’プロモーション戦略？特ににブランドがまだ若い段階では、商品をたくさんの人に実際に着てもらってPRすることが大事なんじゃないかな。とにかく身の回りにいるセンスのある子たちに着てもらうっていうのが、当時僕が考えていたプロモーションのプランだったんだと思う。ケイスケとモナは仲のいい友達で、このカップルのことが大好きなんだ。今回二人を起用したシューティングができたことを、とても嬉しく思うよ。
Peelsのプロダクトを作っている時以外は、どんなことをしているの？スケートボード。それからGnarcissistsっていうバンドで演奏したり、ガールフレンドのPaigeとハングアウトしたり。カナル・ストリートにあるスタジオでただ考え事をすることも。そういう時にアイディアを思いつくんだ。Richard Kernとシューティングをしたよね。一から立ち上げた自分のブランドが、ニューヨークの大物写真家とコラボできたことをどう感じた？彼は大好きなフォトグラファーの一人なんだ。友達のMateusに教えてもらったのがきっかけで、彼の写真に興味を持つようになって、彼みたいな写真を撮りたいと思うようになった。あの日のことは未だに信じられないよ。Peelsの歴史に名を残す出来事だ。最初に起用したJazzelleはずっと好きだったモデル。Aliも本当にクールな人で、そんな二人とKernと一緒にシューティングをしただなんて、かなり夢みたいだったよ。
NYのユースやhipたちにとってのPeelsの魅力は何だと思う？Peelsが分かりやすく現実的だからじゃないかな。お金を稼ぐことや、大量生産にばかり注力しているブランドがあるよね。でも僕の掲げる目標は、ほとんど真逆なんだ。僕らは違うことをやっている。Peelsはブランドとして未熟な部分がまだまだある。でもそれは、僕自身を反映しているんだ。このビジネスはお金儲けが目的で始まったものじゃない。Peelsの物づくりにはその背後にストーリーがあって、皆がそこに価値を見いだしてくれているというのが、僕にはすごく嬉しいんだ。Peelsのモデルを探す時に注目するのはどういう部分？その人が持っているスタイルとエネルギー。これまでに僕が友達を撮ってきたスナップ写真で特にお気に入りなものがいくつかあって、その中にはまったくモデルの経験がない子たちの写真もある。ブランドを始めた当初から変わらず、自分の考えに正直で居続けているんだ。起用してきたモデルは全員、僕が尊敬している人たちで、彼らは僕に影響を与えてくれている。フォロワー数なんか関係なくて、その人の持つパワーやその人がやっている事に対して、僕が心動かされることがなかったら、ブランドの看板を背負って立つようなことはして欲しくないからね。
Peelsを三つのワードで表すとしたら？楽しさ、オーガニック、エフォートレス。それぞれの商品にかかる手間隙も、Peelsの魅力の一つ。ブランドがこれから拡大していった時、それを維持し続けるのは難しいと思う？うん、それってすごく怖いとたまに思うよ。物づくりの工程はものすごくスローだし、もっと大きい規模でってなったら無理だろうね。一つ一つが手作業だから、今後Peelsが大量生産をすることはないし、ブランドがリッチになることもない。これは僕が受け入れなくちゃならないことでもあるんだ。商品一つ一つが着る人の個性に寄り添っていることが、僕が素敵だなと思っているところ。このまま続けて行くつもりだよ。商品によっては、発送される前に一時間の作業工程が必要なものもある。でもそれは問題ないとおもうんだ。だってそれがリアルだから。リアルであることは、シャツを大量生産してお金儲けをすることよりもよっぽど重要なことだと思うよ。
5年後、ブランドはどうなっていて欲しい？ゆっくりでも着実に成長できていたら嬉しいな。Peelsはまだすごく規模が小さいけれど、僕はそれが気に入ってる。僕は自分と同じシャツを着た人を見るのがすごく嫌いなんだけど、Peelsを着ているときにそういうことは滅多に起こらない。僕はただ自分のアイディアをシンプルな生地に落とし込む、そういうリソースが欲しいだけなんだと思う。僕と、第一アシスタントのIzel Villarbaで作っているだけだから。当面の目標は、Tokyoに進出すること。最近、ヘンテコな地下のアトリエから移って、新しいオフィスを構えたところだから、現状にはすごく満足しているよ。 -
Peels has become the trendy new brand in New York for It girls and boys. Mona and Keisuke model in Peels for our special interview with founder and creator of the company, Jerome Peels. A highly popular brand amongst models, Peels has also caught the eye of photographers such as Richard Kern following in a recent project shot by the influential creative. Can you tell our readers a bit about Peels? How did it all begin?My dad, Jerome Peel, Sr. , started a house painting company in 1990. The first shirt I ever made was intended to be used for his company. I wanted him to wear it on the job and make him look more professional. I had a few extras so I kept one for myself and gave the rest to friends. People started to see them and wanted to know where they came from. I made a few more and it slowly grew from there. In the beginning, I would sell two shirts and with the money buy three more.
How did you learn how to sew / embroider etc?In the initial phases, I was taking everything to a tailor in NYC and I was getting the patches made by a local embroidery business. It got so expensive, so I just bought a little sewing machine and the cheapest embroidery machine off eBay. I had to learn, so I just started messing around. I screwed up a lot of stuff at first, but I'm pretty good now. Since then, we upgraded to industrial machines. We still make all the patches and assemble them at the studio so we can keep a close eye on quality.
We see many models and ‘it girls’ wearing your pieces and sharing photos on their various social media platforms. Was this a strategic PR move?Every company has to give away a lot of product for PR especially in the early phases. I think my PR plan was just to use all my friends and people I thought had good style. Keisuke and Mona are my really good friends and they are my favorite couple. I was so happy to use them for this shoot.
When you’re not making for Peels, what do you spend your time doing?Skateboarding, I also play in a punk band called Gnarcissists, I hang with my girlfriend Paige. I spent a lot of time at my studio on Canal Street just thinking and that's when I come up with ideas.You recently did a shoot with Richard Kern, what’s it like to be able to work with big names in NYC due to your company that started from such humble beginnings?RK is one of my favorite photographers. My friend Mateus turned me on to him. Since then I tried to take photos like his. So I just reached out to him. I still can't believed that day happened. It was definitely a milestone for Peels. I've always loved Jazzelle. We used her on our first shoot ever. Ali is also such a cool person so them together and Kern shooting it was pretty dream like.
What do you think it is about Peel’s garments that appeals to the young and hip of NYC?I think it's easy to see the realness of Peels. Some brands main focus is making money and mass producing. My goal is almost the opposite. We do things different. We are still unprofessional in so many ways. But it's a reflection of me. This business wasn't started to make money. There is a story behind Peels and I'm glad people can appreciate that.
What do you look for when scouting for models to promote Peels?It's all about style and energy. Some of my favorite photos I've ever snapped were of friends that had never modeled before. Attitude is equally important. I’ve stayed true to my thoughts since day one. Everyone of the models I've used is someone I appreciate or am inspired by. Regardless of their following, if I'm not into their energy and what they do, I'm not trying to have them represent the brand.What three words would you use to describe Peels?Fun, organic, effortless.Part of the appeal for your products is the time and effort that you have put into each garment. Does this affect the way you want your company to develop? Is it difficult to see Peels expanding when its ethos is rooted in the notion of personalisation and ‘going through your hands’?Yes it is, it's scary at times. The process is extremely slow and impossible to make on a large scale level. The brand will never be mass produced due to the customization and the brand will probably never get me rich. This is something I've had to accept. I love that every piece is unique to the individual. I plan to keep it that way. Some pieces take almost an hour to finish before they are mailed. This is ok to me. It's real and that's more important than having money and a mass produced shirt.
Where do you want Peels to be in five years time?The slow but steady growth so far has been amazing to me. Peels is still very small but I like it that way. I hate when I see someone with the same shirt as me and that is very rare when wearing Peels. Looking ahead, I really just want to have the resources to put my ideas into tangible fabric. It's just me and my number one assistant Izel Villarba. My goal is to take us both to Tokyo, we just moved from a creepy basement to a small office so we are very happy at the moment.
